Long-Awaited “Missing Piece” Of His Storied Career In Stores February 23rd (Time Life)

George Jones is the gold standard of country singing, but many of his most important and best-loved songs have long been unavailable to his fans. On February 23rd, Time Life will issue George Jones: The Great Lost Hits, a historic 2-CD collection of his rare and largely out-of-print recordings that were originally released by the Musicor record label between 1965 and 1972. On the same date, a special 12 track, single CD version will be exclusively available at Wal-Mart as well as digitally at Wal-Mart.

I received mine yesterday from a friend at a record dist. and I am very pleased with the song selection and the cover artwork and notes.
I must say I question a bit the fact that these are "lost" recordings as many of them are still readily available on any number of cd's out there. They mention a legal issue that made these songs out of print for a long time. No further explination was given, just saying they were now available. I do know for many years the Musicor catalog was a big mess, being sold off and distributed in budget releases etc.. Gusto, Hollywood labels just to name a few. Usually they were 10-12 track compilations and quite often poor and varied sound quality.

But that is the treasure here! It is hands down the best I have heard any of these recordings. Simply wondeful sound. Given the haphazard original production of many of these recordings when they were made, I am amazed how good they all sound here. The mix is great, crisp and clear stereo.

I would highly recommend this collection to anyone who is a fan or who would like a great representation of Jones during this time period. Along with many of the big hits there are some fantastic album tracks that have long been favorites of mine.

I'm sure the Walmart one will be nice too, but only 12 tracks. Spend the extra dollars and get the double disc. You won't be disappointed smile.gif Or be a diehard fan like me and buy both versions. Heck by several and turn someone on to the Possum !!
